Sir Chris Hoy won three gold medals in cycling in the Olympics in 2008. He also got his knighthood for his cycling. What most people don't know is that he started cycling in bmx competitions and he was inspired to try cycling by watching the famous Hollywood film "ET".
It's funny the effect that films and stories can have. They can inspire us to do all sorts of things we might not otherwise have thought of doing.
Famous sport people and politicians, writers and musicians will tell you that they were inspired by some great leader or singer. Most of us can think of a song that really touched us at some critical point in our lives and inspired us. Some people would say that they are inspired by stories they have ready in the Bible or heard from preachers. These are often stories that Jesus told, like the one about the young man who asked his dad for his inheritance while he was still young and long before his dad died. His dad gave him his inheritance and the young man promptly blew it all on stuff that didn't last. Then when he was peniless and alone he decided to go back to his dad and admit that he had made a terrible mistake. His dad was so delighted to have his son back that he threw a huge party for all his friends and accepted him back in to the family.
That story was told to show people how God deals with people. It must have been pretty difficult for that young man to go back to his dad and he probably felt unworthy of the love his dad poured out on him. People often come to a point in life where they realise they have made a huge mistake and would like to go back and change things, they need a new start but they can't change things, time doesn't go backwards. But God says that he can do impossible things - including giving people a new start. Ask Him.
